The Fall of Troy 20 Years of Doppelgänger Live concert at Gramercy Theatre ( Review)

The venue was too cramped for a sold out show. Floor was sloped downwards-- seemed like a safety hazard. Stairs to theatre seating were too steep for me to even attempt.

Staff was rude as hell. Had to beg for water in a cup of ice, which was given with a giant side of attitude. The sort of attitude an angsty teen might give, not a full grown adult bartender. Staff treated me like a schmuck and entire audience like rats. Any false move they'd blind you with aggressive flashlight to the eyes. Gave me (and everyone else) tiny plastic shot glasses of tap water when asked for water. Can of chilled water was six dollars. Once show was over a guy absolutely bellowed "Get out!!" while he waved a high powered flashlight side to side. This happened within mere seconds of the final notes of TFOT. Erak had only tossed one guitar pick to some people at the barrier. Now onto the show...

Openers sucked aside from the metalcore band that was just okay.

Fall of Troy were pretty good but Thomas Erak was goofing around 80% of the time and barely sang. And they kept bringing up people for karaoke. People I did not know or care for and who are not in TFOT-- the band I paid to see. The audience was really stiff. Dude next to me just kicking his legs out randomly. Got my foot stepped on. Random dude pushing me for no reason as I gently walked past and didn't even touch him. New York City crowd kind of sucked.

When Erak actually decided to try he was great. He tried for the beginning of the set (about 2-3 songs) and when he played a song off Unlikely Event. The entire rest of the concert wasn't taken seriously or was live karaoke. Bass player did his job. Weirdly the band members didn't seem too locked in with one another. Sort of playing "to" one another but not "with." TFOT almost had the audience a few times but never really grabbed ahold of everyone there. Seemed to be going through the motions somewhat. However...

The band does rip and Erak does fulfill rock-star status with his long hair and stage presence. Guitar seems pretty effortless for him. I didn't notice any mistakes-- just too many stage antics and barely any singing from him. He was too busy making out with his opening acts on stage and making a mockery of his own music by simulating sex with a dude on stage. Disappointing. 4/10 concert experience. Venue being bad didn't help. Would give TFOT one more chance but hope they'd (just Erak really) take it much more seriously next time around. And maybe play in Albany instead of Manhattan. - Mike
